New agreement to boost Australia’s defence surveillance capabilities

Mitsubishi Electric Australia (MEA) has signed an agreement with Australia’s Department of Defence to develop and transition a cutting-edge laser technology for the Australian Defence Force. The technology will enhance surveillance and survivability of defence platforms.

The collaboration is the first of its kind between a Japanese company and a foreign government in the defence sector. This is a new business model for Japan, which has been promoting the transfer of defense equipment and technology through public-private partnerships.

Partnership to develop new laser technology

The Department of Defence’s Science and Technology Group is developing the new laser capability. It is being industrialised in partnership with MEA and Japanese industry giant Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (MELCO).

The agreement will allow the Department of Defence to capitalise on MELCO’s ability to commercialise and deliver electro-optic systems for defence applications.

The Department of Defence and MEA will also be able to develop capabilities and prototypes using the laser technology. It will create opportunities for MEA to access MELCO defence technologies of interest to the Australian Defence Force.
