Fujitsu Limited and Macquarie University will set up a lab to focus research on next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.
The Fujitsu Macquarie AI Research Lab at Macquarie University will strengthen an ongoing collaboration in research and development of AI applications and related technologies.
The lab’s inaugural project will focus on developing digital coaching technology to optimise training. It combines Macquarie University’s advanced research capabilities and talent with Fujitsu’s expertise in areas like generative AI and human sensing technology.
The two organisations will use the research lab to promote deeper collaboration in research and development between industry and academia in Japan and Australia. They intend to empower the next generation to use advanced AI technologies to address societal issues.
‘The University is honoured to host Fujitsu’s first Small Research Lab in the Southern Hemisphere and only the third outside Japan,’ says Professor S. Bruce Dowton, Vice-Chancellor and President at Macquarie University.
‘Our work with Macquarie University’s world-class researchers will help us boost our ability to bring transformative applications of technologies like AI to market,’ says Alfee Lee, VP, Head of Uvance, Technology & Solutions of the Fujitsu APAC region.
The Australian lab is part of the Fujitsu Small Research Lab program. The program places Fujitsu researchers at universities in Japan and overseas on industry-academia collaborations.
Macquarie University hosts world-leading AI research capabilities at its Centre for Applied Artificial Intelligence and Centre for Health Informatics, pioneering projects in banking, education and healthcare.
Fujitsu will deliver technology developed in this research project through its Fujitsu AI Platform. The platform offers users access to a range of modules and functions based on advanced AI technologies. Fujitsu Australia Limited will develop and conduct demonstrations for implementation of this technology in healthcare, retail and the public sector.
