POSCO to develop hydrogen electrolysers with Australian manufacturer Hysata

The collaboration will support POSCO Group to decarbonise its steelmaking operations.

Korean steel manufacturer POSCO will partner with Australia’s Hysata to develop high-efficiency electrolysers for green hydrogen production.

POSCO Holdings and Hysata signed a joint development agreement (JDA) to develop materials and systems for the high-efficiency electrolysers. The partnership will also focus on accelerating the commercialisation of Hysata’s electrolyser technology.

POSCO Eco & Challenge (E&C) and Hysata also signed a separate JDA to collaborate on the engineering and construction of the electrolysers.

The two JDAs build on POSCO Holdings and POSCO E&C’s investments in Hysata’s Series B funding round. Hysata raised US$111 million, the largest Series B in Australian clean tech history.

This industry-leading partnership supports the group’s sustainability goals, including decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors such as steelmaking.

Hysata was spun out of the University of Wollongong to commercialise breakthrough Australian high-efficiency hydrogen electrolyser technology. Its mission is to accelerate the move from fossil fuels to green hydrogen by delivering the world’s most efficient, simple and reliable electrolyser.

Hysata is pioneering a capillary-fed electrolyser system that bypasses conventional liquid electrolyte reservoirs, which are typical in alkaline and PEM electrolyser systems. This innovative approach claims to achieve an electrical efficiency of 95%, exceeding the 70-75% efficiency rates of existing commercial systems.

Australia’s advantages in hydrogen electrolyser manufacturing

Australia’s hydrogen electrolyser manufacturing (HEM) sector could generate A$1.7 billion in revenue, according to a new report from CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency.

The Hydrogen Electrolyser Manufacturing report says Australia has an opportunity to seize a piece of the global electrolyser market, thanks to:

  • a strong starting position, supported by an emerging cohort of Australian manufacturers translating research innovations into commercial applications
  • a significant domestic pipeline of renewable hydrogen projects creating local demand and supply chain benefits.

Australia has abundant renewable energy resources that make us well placed to produce hydrogen at internationally competitive prices. Major trading partners such as Japan and Korea have expressed a significant appetite for importing renewable hydrogen and its derivatives.
